Located in Queens, New York, LaGuardia Airport is the third busiest airport serving the New York Metropolitan area. CARVART was asked by HOK to design custom GRAPHICglass and moveableWALLS for LaGuardia’s highly-secure TSA entrance. Given the entrance’s strict visibility requirements, CARVART served as the primary coordinator between multiple agencies and design partners (TSA, NYPATH, architects, general contractors, and glass glaziers) in order to create a printed glass that meet all safety regulations and design priorities. CARVART designed custom GRAPHICglass with multiple printed layers to create a highly-secure barrier that allowed for the transmission of natural light and a unique and inspired visual presence. Using our glassSTACKWALL > frameless system, our designers engineered a sleek yet easily movable portal within the main wall, granting TSA the ability to seamlessly control traffic and security. In order to create a light-emitting, movable privacy-barrier for TSA, CARVART com-bined our glassSTACKWALL> frameless system with customized GRAPHICglass. The GRAPHICglass was printed on multiple layers to create a specific visual opacity matching the visibility requirements of multiple entities. Inspired by the Manhattan skyline and the colors of the NY state flag, the layers of GRAPHICglass were comprised of circles, -varying in size, opacity and color- that overlapped to create vertical pillars reminiscent of New York City’s skyscrapers. Using this technique- the glass was not only protective, but also presented a sense of three-dimensional depth and movement.
