CARVART Materiality Overview

Etched
Full coverage texture or pattern design created on the surface of glass by applying acidic, caustic or abrasive substances. Smudge and fingerprint resistant finish.

Engraved
A physical process using special tools to etch designs into the surface of glass. Common techniques include point, stipple, drill and sandblasting. The engraved surface of glass may be left rough, etched with acid, or polished.

Back Paint
Glass that has been painted on the back side. From the front, the glass is no longer translucent, but instead a solid color.

Digitally Print
Capability to replicate digital imagery onto glass permanently, using the method of UV or ceramic digital printing. UV uses inorganic inks, and ultraviolet light to dry during the the firing stage, so that the inks become an integral part of the printed glass.

Silk Screen
Designs created by using a stencil and applied to the glass surface by spreading ink across a mesh screen. The stencil blocks out areas of glass, as the ink flows through onto the glass to create the design. The glass undergoes firing, providing heat treatment in which the ink has adhered to the glass.

Annealed
Annealed glass is ordinary glass that has not been heat-strengthened or tempered. Annealing is the process of cooling glass in a controlled manner to reduce internal stresses in the finished glass.

Monolithic
Monolithic glass is a single piece of glass constructed using one glass thickness. Produced using either annealed, heat-treated or tempered glass float method. Can be enhanced through additional fabrication for insulating capabilities, design enhancements and added strength.

Laminated
A safety glass option, laminated glass is constructed by combining two or more pieces of glass fused together with middle layers of PolyVinyl Butylenes [PVB], Etyleen Vinyl Acetate [EVA] and Sentry Glass [SG], which act as a bonding agent to hold broken glass together, creating a barrier against entry and reduces the chances of flying shards of glass.

Heat Soaked Glass
Heat soaking is a process utilized to expose imperfections in tempered glass before the glass reaches the field.

Tempered
A safety glass option, tempered glass is annealed glass that has been heat treated to harden and strengthen it. With tempered glass, the cooling process is accelerated to create higher surface compression and/or edge compression in the glass, making the glass four to five times stronger and safer than annealed or untreated glass. When tempered glass breaks it breaks into small pebble shaped pieces.

IGU
Insulated Glass Units [IGU] consist of two or more panes of glass separated by a spacer material and sealed on the edge. Designed to reduce transfer of temperature and sound.

Acoustic
Two or more pieces of glass designed to minimize the transfer of sound waves. Often called soundproof glass, there are many levels of acoustic insulation which offer differing levels of reduction. This is measured in decibels, or dB for short.

Thermal
Two or more pieces of glass that are made to prevent significant heat transfer. They consists of multiple pieces of glass separated by spacers made of either metal or structural foam.

UV
Glass that provides ultraviolet protection through the use of interlayers or film.

SG Interlayer
Sentry Glass utilizes an ionoplast interlayer laminated between two or more layers of glass for storm, blast, ballistic and single-point supported glass applications. Compared to PVB interlayers, SentryGlas ® ionoplast interlayer is tougher, 100 times stiffer and performs better over a wider temperature range
