CARVART Materiality Overview

Etched
Full coverage texture or pattern design created on the surface of glass by applying acidic, caustic or abrasive substances. Smudge and fingerprint resistant finish.

Engraved
A physical process using special tools to etch designs into the surface of glass. Common techniques include point, stipple, drill and sandblasting. The engraved surface of glass may be left rough, etched with acid, or polished.

Back Paint
Glass that has been painted on the back side. From the front, the glass is no longer translucent, but instead a solid color.

Digitally Print
Capability to replicate digital imagery onto glass permanently, using the method of UV or ceramic digital printing. UV uses inorganic inks, and ultraviolet light to dry during the the firing stage, so that the inks become an integral part of the printed glass.

Silk Screen
Designs created by using a stencil and applied to the glass surface by spreading ink across a mesh screen. The stencil blocks out areas of glass, as the ink flows through onto the glass to create the design. The glass undergoes firing, providing heat treatment in which the ink has adhered to the glass.
